This year Sun Peaks Elementary will be having a cross-country running team for students in grades 3-7 that are interested. Your son/daughter has expressed an interest in taking part. The students attend five cross-country meets throughout the district and run between 1.0 km and 2.2 km’s, depending on their grade and specific race. When starting out, the students often find the races long, but they are a lot of fun and a great challenge. We will have practices on Mondays and some Thursdays at lunch starting at 12:15. The practices will be be over by12:45. Students should come prepared with proper running attire. Any help is appreciated. If you are interested in coming out to run please meet in the back area of the school at 12:10. Practice runs will vary between 1.0 km and 3.0 km depending on the day.
Most of the races begin at 3:00 (please see below for the schedule), although we will need to leave the school promptly at 1:50 in order to be on time for the race. It is imperative that we have parent drivers for each event. Also, if you can drive, can you please indicate so on the attached form and contact me here at the school. Please note that the final run is the “Billy Goat Run” at Dufferin Elementary and occurs on a Friday. For our students to attend this race we will need parents to help organize rides for your children. I will attend the race, but will not be available to help make sure each student has a ride. I ask that you please talk with other parents to organize rides for this race. I also understand if your child is unable to attend this event as it is on a day when school is not in session. Please let me know if that is the case. I am happy to organize rides for all of the other events.
For the races, the students will need to be prepared with shoes and shorts. Your child will be provided with a school jersey for the race, however, If they have a green Sun Peaks School Shirt, I would ask that they wear it as it is a noticeable colour and will help our school to stand out at the races, also, we have a limited number of jerseys to use. Students will be responsible for their jerseys for the season and it is important that the jerseys are washed and returned to the school once the season ends. Also, as with all school events, it is important that students demonstrate positive behaviour and respect for others when they are out in the community. I have no doubt, that all students will show this for each event.
